inEvitable is the latest musical endeavor of Evi Filippou. It revolves around experimentation on the forms of Greek folk, jazz and improvisational music. The need for personal expression led the percussionist and songwriter into a path of musical research on her listening roots, back to the folk heritage of her home country, with tunes that range between timeless traditional melodies, the modern singer-songwriter tradition and the folk songs of the ’60 and 70’s. At the same time, her course in the contemporary and improvisational Berlin scene has mingled with this deep endemic investigation.
This particular merge of genres and personal experiences, resulted in the creation of inEvitable, a band comprised of Eldar Tsalikov (clarinet, alto saxophone), Arne Braun (guitar), Moritz Baumgärtner (drums) and Felix Henkelhausen (double bass).
The record inEvitable, is a collection of arrangements and compositions inspired by folk and traditional genres. The unique sound of the vibraphonist and the intimate choral storytelling, create a safe haven for a traditional dance tune from the island of Corfu, a serbian classic, a spiritual song from the african-american tradition, an instrumental version of Angelique Ionnatos’ music composed on greek poetry to interact with Berlin's finest improvisers and the maximalism of Filippou's arrangements. The result is an ecumenical musical cosmos, filled with postcards from all over the world.
Julius Gawlik (tenor sax) and Jone Bolibar (clarinet, bass clarinet) join the band to create a strong brass band effect, while Lara Alarcon's velvet voice imitates the polyphonic singing of the mountain of Eipiros. Last but not least, the sorceress of Greek lyricism Katerina Fotinaki brings the Cretan sound on the acoustic guitar and completes Filippou's debut recording.
The result is a tight, au courant take on the multicultural environment in which she has been exposed and immersed herself into;
a mosaic of distorted flashes of modernity and of
tender, etheral explorations on archaic musical forms.

This music was created in an effort to connect to my “greekness”. Being an immigrant in Germany, I spent a lot of time thinking about the concept of homeland and heritage. The profound melancholy of Greek traditional music didn’t resonate with me entirely. I was missing the spontaneity and the playful wink at the sight of hardships that one can only find in jazz and improvised music. Leaving Greece lit a little fire in me. It was then that I first realized I belong in an imaginary world somewhere between musical universes which perhaps seem so far yet they intersect and interconnect at the rhythmical point of a beating heart.
